The mysterious case of the disappearing whine and the non-existent butter and egg tray lid

I am very pleased with this fridge freezer, which represents the best compromise I could find for my needs, which were -Slim width. I wish I could have found space for a 60cm, but all those that I looked at, and might have considered, also added depth to width. I could have taken a taller fridge, for greater capacity, but height went also with greater depth and width.I would have liked a 50/50 fit between fridge and freezer rather than the approx. 60/40 external split this has - so that is another compromiseWhiteFrost free/auto defrost. Does anyone actually enjoy defrosting?Glass, not plastic shelving, and smooth, straight edged, not curvy or patterned shelving - the previous FF which recently gasped its last (10 yrs old) had textured toughened plastic, with curvilinear edging, and the texture made it an absolute pain to keep clean, the curved over edges were awkward to slide in and out, and the plastic less robust than glass2, rather than one, salad/crisper drawers. And again, with straight rather than curvy (space wasting) edges This was a must for me. I wanted to separate fruits from vegetables, particularly the stronger smelling veggies. One big salad drawer is also much harder to remove for cleaning. Unfortunately, most manufacturers stuck with the single drawer, Hotpoint, Indesit and Zanussi amongst mid-price, were the double drawer models.Transparent freezer drawers to enable identification of contents at a glance. Mind you this will never be as much of a feature on working models since a degree of mistiness comes with freezer temperatures.Rapid freeze facility for energy efficiencyReasonably priced - and lest you raise eyebrows at that statement with the (to me) outrageously high-for-what-it-is, on this site, I shopped around. This is a great fridge, but NOT at the marketplace price offered here. Pretty well every major retailer was offering this model, in late 2012, at under 300 - including delivery! The retailer I chose even offered a one hour timed next day delivery for that price, and would also recycle and remove the old model for a very modest extra charge. They were most Cooperative (!!)Antibacterial/mould inhibiting sealsMy failure to award the final star really reflects the compromises I had to make, as no one model gave everything.The main drawback with this, for me, is that unequal split between freezer and fridge - I would have liked 50/50 with a generous capacity in both, and also regret the shorter height of the 4 drawers in the freezer - the top shelf is particularly squeezed by the frost free/air circulation mechanism. I continue to yearn for a mythical taller fridge freezer, which is slim and willowy - a sort of supermodel physique - to give an additional drawer or a deeper set of drawers in the freezerOther aspects I really like with this model - it is quite resistant to open - needs a good tug, both with fridge and freezer. This means the seal is good. One of the problems with my previous model, which was supposed to be frost free (but wasn't) was that the seal was not so good, hence the need for frequent defrosting.The quality of drawers and shelves, and their handle slots, is excellent, really good lines, sturdy yet elegant and unfussy - I've never understood the vogue for curvy edges and recesses which are not easy to keep clean.Ice tray feature - instead of open ice trays, this has the neatly designed closed trays which slot into the top of two of the freezer drawers. Large consumers of iced drinks may well find the cubes (or rounds!) too dinky and insufficient - 10 half rounds to each tray.Net capacity of fridge is 150 litres and the smallish freezer is 75 litres. A family model it isn't, and the smaller freezer capacity means I can't do as major a `cook for the freezer-a-thon' as I would like. However, as a vegetarian I have no need for shelves which can hold half a poached deer or a captured shark anyway.And as for the whine........when I first turned on the machine, after its recommended `gas canister contents settling time' there crept in, along with the expected noises a low level high pitched whine of tinnitus quality, almost imperceptible but nonetheless persistently irritating. Turned off machine. Blessed silence. Turned it on again, normal fridge noises, no whine. And then, around 5 minutes later, there was that whine again. Operation repeated. Length of time before whine, a little longer. I repeated this a few times, and was beginning to think this was not going to be a happy partnership after all. The following morning, I entered the kitchen to complete silence, no fridge noises at all. However the operating light was on, and a pressing of the ear to the fridge door yielded a barely perceptible operating noise. Inside, everything was as expected, cool (fridge) and frozen (freezer) For the most part, this is a hushed and silent fridge, the whine - which I've come to accept as it occurs briefly - happens only when the temperature rises and it brings itself back to its resting level. So it is brief chuntering when you open the doors only. Otherwise, this is almost Trappist.This is an improved, updated version of the FFA52P, which had some negative reviews on Amazon. This, specified compromises aside, is a happy and cooperative (!!) buyExcept for the butter and egg tray shelf lid. All publicity material which Hotpoint provides to all shopping sites clearly show a lid. But as I have discovered Hotpoint have modified the design and the egg tray and butter compartment are now lidless. And, for some unknown reason, the egg tray is too wide to sit flat in the shelf, but is designed so that it fits on a slight slant. I have no idea why. Perhaps the designer has a fetish to see the back row of eggs. Maybe their desire to see those eggs in all their leaning tower of Pisa glory led them to abandon that lid which hid them from view.
