Good whilst it lasted, but it didn't last

Brought this washer dryer in September 2009. Our kitchen was so tight on space, a separate washing machine and dryer simply wasn't an option. We opted for this AEG, thinking that spending a little more would buy us a better product that would do a good job and last the distance.Initially the machine worked well and was incredible quiet. It washed well, albeit with very little water, which although the norm these days to achieve top energy rating, doesn't work well for very soiled laundry. Thus, for much of our washing we were having to enable a pre-wash and a less than obvious button combo to select an extra rinse.Drying performance was good, so long as one doesn't put too much in the drum at once. The large 7kg is great for large washing loads, but don't expect to dry more than 3-4 garments quickly at once.However, and this is a big however, for the last year (2012), the machine has been getting progressively noisier during it's spin cycle. This autumn the dryer function stopped working, it would go through the motions, but everything remained cold and wet. Finally this November 2012, the machine died, creating a lot of noise, smoke and burning smell when trying to spin. After just over 3 years the drum 'spider' has broken and the drying PCB died.I have been quoted £172 to replace the drum (whole drum needs replacing at once) and £149 for the dryer PCB. So do you sums, ~£600 for 3 years service. Two cheap washer dryers at £250 each, lasting anything more than 1.5 years each would be better value for money... Please read other AEG reviews, many will echo my experiences, it seems that today AEG is not a brand worth paying a premium for.
